Try before you buy our mouldings

Earlier this year, we launched a new FREE service that aimed to help homeowners eliminate uncertainty when deciding on the exterior details of their homes. Our catalogue contains over 100 different stock mouldings that can be combined in an infinite number of ways and choosing is never easy.

We have since created 150 customized designs for our clients and the feedback has been great. Working from a photo (even one taken from camera phones), we can completely transform your home so you'll know exactly what to expect before a contractor even sets foot on your property. If you're in the Greater Toronto Area, we will come and take the picture for you or you can take the shot yourself and email it to us.

After an initial consultation by phone or email, our team of designers will take that information and re-create your home and include desired colours as well. We will also simulate your chosen stucco, brick or stone walls.

Our Inside the Lab posts on this blog will show you some before and after examples. Click here to see the different possibilities available.

If you are interested in our 3D rendering service, please contact Davide at (905) 660-6338 or toll-free at 1 888 MOULDEX. You can also email at davide@mouldexmouldings.com

Replacing rotting wood mouldings

Here we are, a quaint little lakefront property in Oakville. The home was built in 1970s and lined with a stone wall that ran alongside the property. Only one problem. It was capped with a wood exterior moulding. The contractor should have seen this from a mile away. But back then, architectural foam mouldings didn't exist. Not only did the life of the wood have Mother Nature to contend with but also the extra moisture coming from the lake close by. A recipe for rotting disaster as you can see from the photo below.

There are a few issues with using wood mouldings and trim on the exterior of your property.

1. It's organic, meaning it needs to breathe in order to live. As soon as a finish like paint is applied and covers the moulding, the ability to live is reduced drastically. Kind of like blocking air passages in your body.

2. Wood mouldings are assembled using multiple pieces. This particular wood cap seen below was made using four separate mouldings, as soon as one starts to break down, the remaining will disassemble leaving more openings for moisture and rot to enter.

3. It requires regular maintenance. Even if the wood does survive, any homeowner with exterior wood mouldings will tell you that it will need constants attention. That means you'll either have to pay someone to do the upkeep or spend time doing it yourself.

Like we said, back then, architectural foam mouldings didn't exist. If they did, the owner of this property would be free of the headaches caused by what they see now.

When compared to wood;

1. Architectural foam mouldings are inorganic. They will never be affected by rain, snow, hail. They will never be infected by termites and since it's not living matter like wood, will never rot or decay.

2. Architectural foam mouldings are made in one piece, making it a much more stable solution.

3. Architectural foam mouldings require VERY LITTLE maintenance. Never again will you have to replace them and the only reason why you will ever need to apply another coat of paint is if you want to change colours.

And the cost? In the short term, it’s a much more cost effective solution to wood mouldings since there is only one piece as opposed to multiple sections. And in the long term, you’ll never need to hire or do regular maintenance yourself.

To see our wood moulding alternatives, please visit http://www.mouldexmouldings.com. We can create any shape that is currently offered in wood at a fraction of the cost. And without any headaches.

Bring your bay window to life

The definition of a bay window is a window that projects outward from the face of a home/building and forming a bay.

Simple enough right?

But add Mouldex Mouldings to that and here's what you get.
A stylized window that projects outward from the face of house/building and forming an elegant bay.

The trend of "upgrading" bay windows is becoming more popular. As it should be. It takes up a nice amount of real estate and is a big eye-grabber to onlookers. For homeowners wanting to add a lot but spend a little, consider this.

The cost can range between $1500 and $2500 depending on the size. This includes the cost of mouldings, materials and labour. This inexpensive option can liven the look your home without opting for a complete exterior reno.

A poplular design, as shown in the link below is to continously place a crown moulding above the window, completely covering the open space. Trim is installed below it, running vertically along each window edge.
The design is completed by connecting the above two elements with a sill, again going end to end like the crown moulding.

There are other options available to you, some more simple and some more complex. Each bay window is unique and should be treated as such. Feel free to email us a picture of yours and we can advise on what direction to go in.
